Walsh Family Testimonial

Systems Paving Testimonial: how pavers transform houses into homes

Last spring, the Walsh family of Orinda, Calif., proudly unveiled their new driveway, patio and several retaining walls surrounding their 3/4-acre lot. They didn’t anticipate the dramatic effect that new pavers would have on their home and property. The pale green house, set back among stands of oak trees, blended into the landscape – a visually dull view. When Systems Paving finished the job, all of that changed.

"There was a significant shift in the look of our home," recounts Laura Walsh. "We just didn’t expect it to look so good. The light-colored pavers draw attention to the house and the retaining walls provide a period look to our house, it gives our house a style that was not present previously. It is a magnificent accent to our whole home."

Before her new pavers, Laura described her house as "a bland sea of color." Now it stands out among the property’s stately oaks. The entrance is highlighted by the tan, charcoal and brown paver stones of the driveway that pull the eye up toward the house. The patio flows seamlessly from the driveway in a continuous pattern of stylish pavers. Beauty and aesthetics were a fringe benefit for the Walsh family, who were drawn to interlocking pavers for more practical reasons.

Interlocking paving stones: practicality and sustainability trumps all other factors
"We could have used concrete for our driveway," says Laura. "But even if we scored it and poured it extra thick, nothing can prevent it from cracking," she adds in reference to the clay-like soil of California, which is continuously expanding and contracting. "And, you just can’t have the expectation that it will look good in 10-15 years. It’s not realistic."

The Walsh's number one reason for choosing paving stones was flexibility. They wanted a material that would move with the soil without cracking or breaking.
The Walsh's also needed easy access to water and sewer lines that run under their 3,000-square-foot driveway. With paving stones, they can access and repair their water or sewer lines by unzipping and zipping them back up seamlessly with the help of a Hardscape Specialist.

Laura also tips her hat to the Hardscape Specialists who took into account the look and feel of the Walsh home, the natural setting, and Laura’s personal style. They gathered all this information to help Laura craft a design and color scheme that was pleasing to the whole family. "I was overwhelmed by the choices of colors, sizes, wall designs, etc., but our contractor helped me coordinate the pavers with the overall look of my home," says Laura. "It’s like working with a talented interior designer but for the outside of your home."
